He has also translated the works of writers such as Raymond Carver and J. D. Salinger in Japanese. Although one of his books, 1Q84, is ranked in Japan as the best novel published during the Heisei period in Japan, his novels are sometimes criticized by Japanese literary circles as not Japanese. Murakami was influenced by Western writers from Chandler to Vonnegut to Brautigan.
