J.K. Rowling Gives Back Human Rights Award And Defends Herself After Kerry Kennedy Comments On Her T

As her transphobia scandal continues, it looks like J.K. Rowling has decided to return her Ripple of Hope Award she received back in December from the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization. Here’s why!

It all started with the comments Kerry Kennedy, who is the organization’s president, made earlier this month, about the Harry Potter author’s controversial statements about transgender people.

On their official website, Kennedy criticized Rowling for all of her ‘deeply troubling transphobic tweets and statements.’

Kennedy wrote that he wanted to ‘express my profound disappointment that she has chosen to use her remarkable gifts to create a narrative that diminishes the identity of trans and nonbinary people, undermining the validity and integrity of the entire transgender community – one that disproportionately suffers from violence, discrimination, harassment, and exclusion and, as a result, experiences high rates of suicide, suicide attempts, homelessness, and mental and bodily harm.’

And now, Rowling took to her own website to claim that Kennedy implied ‘incorrectly’ that she is transphobic, even though he is obviously not the only person who has been telling her the same things!

She proceeded to defend herself by arguing that: ‘As a longstanding donor to LGBT charities and a supporter of trans people’s right to live free of persecution, I absolutely refute the accusation that I hate trans people or wish them ill, or that standing up for the rights of women is wrong, discriminatory, or incites harm or violence to the trans community.’

Finally, J.K. Rowling explained that in solidarity with all the people who have contacted her and don’t have voices of their own, but also because of the ‘conflicting views’ between her and RFKHR, she had decided to return her Ripple of Hope Award.

According to her, no award, no matter how valuable and honorable is worth giving up her ‘conscience’ for.
